As I approach my 20th year in education, I reflect on my purpose as a teacher. My early love for reading, shaped by experiences as an immigrant, drives me to support bilingual students. At our K-8 school in the Bronx, we’re all about getting our students involved in caring for the community. Thanks to New Yorkers for Parks and the #DaffodilProject, every student is digging in and planting daffodil bulbs in our local park and tree beds. It’s amazing to see how passionate these kids are about taking care of our green spaces, no matter their age! Meanwhile, our middle schoolers are on cleanup duty, picking up trash and making signs to remind everyone how important it is to keep our parks clean. Why do they do it? Because they learn best when…

To maintain student engagement in lessons, educators should incorporate varied techniques that foster excitement and memorable learning. Methods like hands-on activities, project-based learning, and community connections can profoundly impact students by allowing them to apply skills and knowledge in real-world contexts. Active learning is particularly effective for diverse learners, making learning relevant and unforgettable. Collaborating with local organizations and organizing field trips further enrich students’ experiences, connecting classroom lessons to the outside world. These approaches ultimately enhance academic performance, encourage curiosity, and help students become lifelong learners. Creative, enjoyable learning strategies will leave lasting memories for students.
